How do you know who your favorite player is?

Recently there have been a few posts out there about what kind of an option Andre Ethier would be for the Giants. Ethier, who is still in the middle of an outfield logjam with the Dodgers, is still a candidate to be traded. He also seems like the kind of player the Giants would really like.

He has been known to step-up in big moments, can be platooned a little, and is definitely familiar to them.

Here’s a video of what Ethier did a few years ago right after the Diamondbacks’ Ian Kennedy hit Yasiel Puig in the face. Puig’s ability to go to first base combined with Ethier’s timely homer told me a lot about the team’s toughness that season.

First, this happened:

Then, Andre Ethier, the next batter, did this off that Kennedy guy:

It’s probably my single favorite Dodgers highlight of the past two years. A home run after your teammate gets hit by a pitch, followed by a nice, long trot around the bases is exactly what every major leaguer would like to do in that situation.

It’s the kind of moment the Giants seem to have 10 of every time they win the World Series lately. Ethier, whose role on the Dodgers this season is still up in the air, is the kind of player the Giants would really like.

So, who would you least like to see in a Giants uniform?

Sometimes the answer of the fan is not the best answer. If you’d have asked 100 run-of-the-mill Dodger fans that question two or three months ago, I would guess at least 25-40 percent would have said Matt Kemp, despite his declining on-field production.

The obvious answer right now, and for the past few years is Clayton Kershaw. Close-behind Kershaw right now is Yasiel Puig, though Puig might not fit very well on the Giants. All those Giant-fan trolls who tell me about Puig being a bad teammate would lose their minds with joy if he was on their team.

Aside from Kershaw and Puig, I don’t really know who comes next. There are a number of guys in the running for “player who I’d least like to see on the Giants.” Hyun-jin Ryu is high on that list. Zack Greinke and Adrian Gonzalez probably all tie with Ryu for third place in my mind.

Jackie Robinson did it right. His refusal to play for the Giants is one of my favorite baseball stories.

What about you? Which player(s) would make you want to rip your eyeballs out if you saw them in orange and black?
