Peyton Goes Down!… And everybody loses their mind

Peyton Manning had surgery today according to several reports. Yep, he’s one of the best players in football and probably the most important single player to his team.

As we discussed in yesterday’s Fansmanship Podcast, the AFC South is wide open. Maybe the Texans finally get over the hump this year.

We also talked about how Manning’s injury could send him the way of Sterling Sharpe, who had a neck injury that forced him out of the game forever.

The really interesting thing to me is the media reaction I heard today on the radio. I actually heard guys talking about how the Colts have too much invested in Peyton and how by not investing in a better backup quarterback, they didn’t give themselves a chance if Peyton went down.

News flash: OF COURSE THE COLTS DON’T HAVE A CHANCE WITHOUT MANNING! Neither do the Packers without Aaron Rodgers, the Saints without Drew Brees, or the Patriots without Tom Brady. I could go on and on and talk about Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, etc… The point is that any Super Bowl contender who loses their star quarterback before the season starts is screwed. They automatically lose their shot at winning it all. That’s just how the NFL is.

This is not something that needs to be analyzed. It is simply a crappy situation for a team that has been lucky to have a great player like Manning be healthy for so long.

For an NFL team in today’s era of football, there is no contingency for a situation like this.
