Mike Breen is the man.

Maybe five years ago, I got to play golf with Mike Breen. It was a great freaking day.

Hearing Breen on the I Am Rapaport Stereo Podcast this week took me back.

In a charity golf tournament for my job, three dudes from my work were grouped with Breen, the celebrity.

Understand that I grew up wanting to be Chick Hearn. I watched Vin Scully all my life and any hockey knowledge I have is because of Bob Miller. I’m insane about sports and play-by-play broadcasters are a big reason why.

Imagine the feeling when the other dudes let me ride in the cart with him. I tried to play it cool, but I noticed something — one of Breen’s teeth looked black. I’m talking black like a dead tooth. Not a side tooth either. A front tooth. On the top. I’m no dentist, but I’d call it a primary tooth for someone’s appearance.

“What is that?!” I asked myself. “I guess I’ve either never noticed it, or maybe he puts a veneer on to call games on television? Whatever it is, I’m sure as hell not going to say anything to him about it.”

I acted like I didn’t see it. If it really was a dead tooth, I didn’t want to be the a-hole to bring it up.

Nobody else seemed to notice it either until about the 8th hole, when my coworker said something and Breen sheepishly took a big piece of dark spinach or something out of his mouth. In not wanting to offend him or whatever, I failed to tell him he had freaking food in his teeth.

The best part of that day was hearing Breen talk about Chick Hearn. I knew I wasn’t going to often get the chance, but Breen, the Knicks announcer for many years, had a number of wonderful Chick stories.

I also waited until Breen hit an approach shot onto the green before yelling “Bang!” Yep. I did that.

I played some of the worst golf of my life that day and flew home the next morning. When I arrived, it was like I’d been in a dream, playing golf with one of the best dudes in the profession — a play by play guy I knew and admired on television.

Last night, Breen called Game 7 of the NBA Finals, and did an awesome job. Without, as far as I could tell, anything stuck in his teeth.

Yep, it’s just Owen this week. Not sure how big of a downgrade this is, but rest assured, like a car accident you can’t help but slow down to oggle, you’re going to want to listen in.

You read it right folks – Owen flies solo for the first time ever in this 20 minute podcast. Topics include media credentials for a golf blogger, the PGA Tour’s lack of hustle, and Cal Poly football’s spring game. I promise it’s (slightly) more exciting than it sounds. Or maybe it’s not. Either way, you should listen and tell me what you think. It’s only like 20 minutes of your life.

Concluding on Tuesday afternoon, Cal Poly’s Justin De Los Santos put up an early 69 (-1) in the third and final round to shoot 2-over par for the tournament and beat UC Irvine’s Pete Fernandez by a single stroke.

I don’t want to brag or anything, but I did call the final winning score early on Monday morning.

OK, enough patting myself on the back.

De Los Santos started the day at three over par and was one of just four players under par in the final round.

Prior to his performance this weekend, the sophomore from Chatsworth’s highest ever finish in a tournament was sixth place.

On the team side, the Anteaters put together an impressive final round. Shooting just five over par as a team, UC Irvine nipped UC Davis by one stroke — 860 to 861.

With the win, both De Los Santos and the Anteaters team will move on to the NCAA Tournament.

This weekend, the Big West Men’s Golf Championship is coming to San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly and head coach Scott Cartwright will try to improve on their 8th place finish in 2014.

The Mustangs and eight other Big West teams will play practice rounds on Saturday afternoon before teeing off for the 54-hole event beginning on Sunday morning.

Despite having just one upper classman on the five-man squad that will play this weekend, sophomore Mitch Martin likes their chances. Martin is a San Luis Obispo native who may have played the par-70 course more than any other participant in the

The event, which starts at 7:30 on Sunday and Tuesday and 9:00 on Monday is free for spectators, who are welcomed to come, stay near the cart paths, and take in some high-level golf.
