There is nothing like home cooking for Joe Callero’s Cal Poly men’s basketball team.
Up by two points in the final seconds on Thursday night, the Mustangs needed a defensive stop at the end of the game to stem a furious UC Riverside run. Over the outstretched arms of Chris Eversley, Riverside’s leading scorer, Phil Martin, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and Cal Poly escaped with a 54-52 victory.
The Mustangs had a 2-game losing streak coming into the game and had spent the last two weeks on the road.
Eversley led the Mustangs with a career high 14 rebounds and 11 points. It was Eversley’s first career double-double. His 14 rebounds are the most by a Mustang this season. Will Taylor chipped in with 13 points and 9 rebounds.
Eversley played 37 minutes in the game, also a career-high.
