I am a Cal Poly grad as well and the athletic organization is really doing an outstanding job with ALL of their teams lately and we need more people like you reporting on their good work, bringing them the visibility they deserve.

Like you said it is unfair to judge a team on one performance or one season, and no one would argue that this team didn’t have a mid-season slump, but so did the men, and yet here we are. I don’t mean to chastise you unfairly but I just want to draw attention to a systematic issue that we should ALL be doing our part of correct. It has to start somewhere, and if the fantastic Cal Poly women’s basketball team isn’t a good place, I don’t know what is.

Thanks again for your good work! Go Mustangs!

I agree, the women’s basketball team can be really fun to watch. I was at the Big West Tournament last season when they won the title and it was great.

As for comparing what gets covered to what, I feel like the Tribune does a decent job of covering the team, especially relative to how other women’s teams get covered and (again) especially in the Big West.

I can really only speak to how/why I pick the games I go to. I could tell you about how writing about Cal Poly (or anything) isn’t something I get paid for and I could tell you about what we’ve tried to do to recruit writers and content producers and I could tell you about my seven month old for whom basketball games are still too noisy, but I’ll spare you.

I go to the games I can, when I can go. I go to as many of the women’s games as I can based on my schedule. I think they are fun to watch and cover and all of my interactions with the players and coaching staff have been top-notch. The last game I went to was against Northridge and they looked tired and got blown-out.

If you want women’s hoops to be covered as much as men’s, I think that’s wishful thinking in the present unless you’re at a place like Tennessee. Before this year, the men’s team has actually been winning quite a bit — not as much as the ladies, but certainly not bottom-half. I don’t see any reason to disparage the totality of what Callero and co. have done over the past five years.

As for the ladies, prior to the arrival of Kristina Santiago, that program wasn’t exactly fantastic, either in terms of wins and losses.

Don’t forget, the season isn’t over either. While the men do have a low seed in this week’s conference tournament, the women do not. Them playing in the finals would not be a surprise and I would imagine I’d probably write something about that if it happened and I might write a recap anyway… .

All that being said, I agree the ladies are worth watching. They are a fun team. I could have gone and covered them more but, especially for the resources we/I have, I think I’ve covered them a fair amount.

Thanks again for reading and responding! -O

What else is the program supposed to do to get equal treatment by the press, which all thing considered, is a ridiculously low bar to clear up against a team that is consistently in the bottom half of the conference. They are the most exciting basketball team on the central coast and it’s time we started treating them as such.
