Ultimately, what I think it all comes down to is: the sports and basketball culture in California. Here pro sports are more popular, especially in basketball. Kids are used to growing up the “the lakers” with 5 MLB teams, 3 NFL teams, 3 NHL teams and 3 other NBA teams. (and exorbitant and wasteful budgets on high school sports stadiums and gyms)
The two guys (other than the host, sorry didn’t catch the names) are exactly what I’m talking about they grew up on pro sports and they just aren’t in the mindset of college sports and what makes them great. They’re about players and a show. college basketball is about rivals, traditions, alumni, crazy student sections, march madness, pure arenas (nba arenas are shared with hockey and have tone of amenities and other distractions)
They aren’t growing up going to VCU games and Maryland, Mt. St. Mary’s, New Mexico St games like I did. Think about it, to quote a friend living in DC, “there are no such thing as wizards fans. That’s where the Hoyas play! (Georgetown) Imagine if the Staples Center was know as “where the trojans play” and the lakers were secondary. If college basketball was as big as it is in NC, VA, MD, DC, KY, upstate NY, KS and Ind. Cal Poly basketball would be much bigger like it is at mid major in the east and central us. MD, VA and DEL combined have more college basketball teams than CA, Washington, and Oregon. BAM!
To be fair, in MD, I imagine Wizards have the same complaints we do about Cal Poly basektball. Everything I said goes vise versa.
