When you think of greatness in the NFL, you think of success in the playoffs. Great players are the ones who are able to overcome adversity and lead their teams to both playoff and Super Bowl wins. A lot of the time, that greatness comes in the form of a team’s quarterback and more recently we have seen different quarterbacks become “great” right before our eyes. In today’s NFL, we think of Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning and even Joe Flacco last season. While all these players are great at what they do, I believe that one of them is a bit overhyped for his play in the playoffs despite all his greatness.

Peyton Manning is the greatest regular season quarterback I have even seen, but the key words there are regular and season. Manning will go down as one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL but his lack of success in the playoffs will be the only pinch on his hall of fame resume. To his credit, he did win a Super Bowl with the Colts. But his postseason record stands at 9-11 with eight one-and-done appearances in the playoffs and a very disappointing loss last season to the Ravens in the divisional round. He’s been great throughout his career, just not AS great in the playoffs.

Manning had a season to remember in 2013. In the greatest statistical season ever by a quarterback, he piled-up 55 touchdowns, 10 interceptions while throwing for a record 5,477 yards. In the process, he led the Broncos to a 13-3 record along with the AFC West division title and the number one overall seed in the AFC playoffs.

We all know about Manning and his impressive numbers, but when the games have mattered a little more, he and his teams have just been average. Peyton had an historic 2013 but with another early playoff exit, his superlative regular season won’t seem as great, like others before it.

Ah it’s that time of the year again.

It’s a time where every single player in the NFL and all the loving and passionate fans can have real hope that maybe, just maybe this is the year their team will win the Super Bowl. It’s great isn’t it? For a football fan, the start of the NFL season can be compared to a child entering a candy store for the first time in their lives, exciting and new. Each year brings new stories, new players and a healthy amount of restored hope.

As we await kickoff, the questions start to surface about which teams will still be standing in February. For the first time in my lifetime, the Super Bowl will be held in a cold weather location — MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It’s going to be a great NFL season so here are my final pre-season predictions for the 2013-2014 NFL season:

It’s never too early for predictions, especially when it comes to the pre draft NFL. In the upcoming draft, each team will make selections to try and help their current rosters make a run at the Super Bowl. Although the rosters for the start of the season won’t be complete until much later in the year, it’s still fun to look at what each team has done up to this point and make predictions for what will happen. Here are my predictions for the upcoming NFL season, pre NFL draft:

Russell Wilson and the Seahawks will take the next step and beat out the NFC champion 49ers in 2013. By Larry Maurer, via Wikimedia Commons

Russell Wilson and the Seahawks will take the next step and beat out the NFC champion 49ers in 2013. By Larry Maurer, via Wikimedia Commons

NFC West:

  1. Seattle Seahawks: If not for a collapse in the playoff game against the Falcons, they might have made an incredible run towards the Super Bowl last season and I expect the Seahawks to improve. With the additions of Percy Harvin and Cliff Avril, they are legitimate contenders. They basically stole the Vikings receiving duo in Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin and now look poised to be a force. It starts with a division title in 2013.
  2. San Francisco 49ers: The defending NFC champions got even better on paper with the additions of Anquan Boldin and Nnamdi Asomugha. They will still be a dominant force because of their defense but I believe that teams will start to figure out Colin Kaepernick. He showed me a lot in the Super Bowl as a rookie and hopefully, for ‘Niner fans, that experience makes him better. For now, though, I’m picking the Seahawks as the best team in this division.
  3. St. Louis Rams: The Rams are a good young team that is improving each year and 2013 won’t be any different. Except this year they won’t have Danny Amendola, who was a huge factor on offense for them but look for them to build upon a decent year and look to improve their players and gain more experience to try and get back to the playoffs in a year or two.
  4. Arizona Cardinals: Arizona started 4-0 last season and look liked a legit sleeper team in the NFC but then dropped 11 of their next 12 games. They added Carson Palmer, who should help the offense some. But unless 2005 Carson Palmer arrives in Arizona, the Cardinals will be at the bottom of the standings again, which is sad for a franchise that made it to the Super Bowl just five years ago.

NFC South:

  1. Atlanta Falcons: The dirty birds were the best team in the NFL last season and if not for a bad non holding call, would have probably made the Super Bowl. This year’s Falcons look to finally improve on a year where they actually won a playoff game. The additions of Stephen Jackson and Osi Umenyiora plus the return of Tony Gonzalez will help the Falcons be legitimate title contenders once again.
  2. New Orleans Saints: After looking dead in the water early in the season, the Saints somehow went 7-9 and I believe if the season was longer would have snuck into the playoffs. Getting Sean Peyton back this year will greatly improve the team and I expect them to get back into the playoffs. Some people think that Peyton was the cause for the bizarre blackout in the Super Bowl so maybe he is out for revenge against the NFL and the best way to start that is by making the postseason.
  3. Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton has gotten much scrutiny over his two years and I’m not quite sure why. He hasn’t had a good team around him in either year and still the Panthers have been 7-9 both seasons. Get some good players around him and good things will happen. I am a huge fan of Newton no matter what the newest college football scandal is. That being said, the Panthers are the third-best team in the South.
  4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Doug Martin was a pleasant surprise for the Bucs last season but he can’t do everything on offense. The Buccaneers went 7-9 last year but I still think they are the worst team in this division, which is an understatement since this is such a good division in my opinion. Josh Freeman has potential but he needs to leave the Bucs in order for it to show, he isn’t the quarterback for this team and the sooner the front office realizes that the better for them.

NFC North:

  1. Green Bay Packers: Even with the departures of Greg Jennings and Donald Driver, the Packers will still be a force in the NFC. After all, they have Aaron Rodgers, who is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. They had a disappointing end to their seasons the last two years and I believe they will be back to try and reclaim their dominance in the NFC.
  2. Chicago Bears: How many teams fire their head coach after going 10-6? That’s exactly what the Bears did by firing Lovie Smith. The Bears aren’t a bad team and with Jay Cutler, Matt Forte and Brandon Marshall on offense, the Bears will still be a force. Unfortunately for ‘da Bears, they play in the NFC where there are too many good teams and the Bears just can’t keep up with the higher-powered offenses they’ll have to face. Still, this should be a good year for the loyal Chicago fans, at least in the regular season.
  3. Detroit Lions: I am not quite sure what happened last year the Lions; I mean, they finally made the playoffs two years ago, then followed it up with a 4-12 record last season. It makes no sense. Then again it is the Lions. Matthew Stafford still has the best receiver in all of football in Calvin Johnson, who to this day is the only player that can claim to have broken the famous “Madden Curse”. The Lions will contend for a while, but won’t have enough to go back to the playoffs.
  4. Minnesota Vikings: This might be the most surprising part of these predictions since the Vikings made the playoffs last year but I believe that the trade of Percy Harvin really hurt the Vikings. It takes away speed on offense and a return game. Adrian Peterson is an absolute monster on the field and he will keep the Vikings relevant next season but it won’t be enough to make an encore trip to the playoffs. They are the cellar dwellers in the NFC North.

NFC East:

  1. New York Giants: I think last season was just a hardcore case of a Super Bowl hangover and the Giants will be back and ready next year. Eli Manning is a baller and will have this team ready to contend again. Fans of New York, don’t worry you won’t have to wait another year to see your team in the playoffs… unless you are Jet fans….
  2. Philadelphia Eagles: A lot of people have been calling me crazy recently because I believe that the Eagles will actually improve a lot this season and be back near the top of the standings. Chip Kelly will make a big difference, especially on a team with so much talent as the Eagles. Injuries killed this team last year. At the beginning of the 2012 season, they looked poised to finally become the dominant team we have been expecting since Michael Vick joined the Eagles. Maybe they get close to that in 2013.
  3. Washington Redskins: Congratulations to all the accomplishments of the Redskins last season but that’s last season. Robert Griffin III is one of my favorite players in the NFL, but his injury in the playoffs looked pretty bad. Like the 49ers’ Kaepernick, I think that teams will start to figure his game out. If RGIII can change his game up, it would not only confuse teams but also help prolong his career. I am going out on a limb here by saying the Redskins regress some and finish third in the division.
  4. Dallas Cowboys: America’s Team? Not anymore. If anything, they have become a team that most people like to watch lose. Tony Romo got a huge contract after only winning one playoff game in his career, which had lots of football fans, including me, questioning this franchise. I don’t see the Cowboys ending the season at the bottom of the NFL standings, just at the bottom of this division’s standings.

Division Winners:

NFC West: Seattle Seahawks

NFC South: Atlanta Falcons

NFC North: Green Bay Packers

NFC East: New York Giants

Wild Card Teams: San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints (Notable other teams: Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions)

Playoff Bracket:

  1. Atlanta Falcons (12-4)
  2. Seattle Seahawks (11-5, own tiebreaker over San Francisco)
  3. Green Bay Packers (10-6)
  4. New York Giants (9-7)
  5. San Francisco 49ers (11-5)
  6. New Orleans Saints (9-7)

6 New Orleans Saints @ 3 Green Bay Packers: (Packers 34-31)

5 San Francisco 49ers @ 4 New York Giants: (49ers 27-14)

5 San Francisco 49ers @ 1 Atlanta Falcons: (Falcons 28-24)

It’s never too early for predictions, especially when it comes to the pre draft NFL. In the upcoming draft, each team will make selections to try and help their current rosters in order to make a run at that coveted Super Bowl ring. Although the rosters for the start of the season won’t be complete until much later in the year, it’s still fun to look at what each team has done up to this point and make predictions for what will happen. Here are my predictions for the upcoming NFL season, pre NFL draft:

AFC North:

  1. Cincinnati Bengals: This is the team that I believe right now will win this division next season. They have gotten better in each of the last two seasons with stellar performances by their duo Andy Dalton and A.J. Green. Plus have one of the youngest and best defensives in the league. It will be difficult for the Bengals, as they have now made the playoffs in consecutive years so they won’t be underdogs anymore. With Pittsburgh and Baltimore on the decline, taking nothing away from the Ravens since they just won the Super Bowl, but I’d expect this division to be the Bengals to lose although it will be a dogfight throughout the year.
  2. Baltimore Ravens: The defending Super Bowl champions lost a lot of experience and leadership with the departures of Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Anquan Boldin but they added some talent back with the signing of Elvis Dumervil. I don’t think the Ravens will win the division but a wild card spot doesn’t seem too far-fetched.
  3. Pittsburgh Steelers: The one time dominant Steelers team of the last seven or so years isn’t the same team and like the Ravens it’s the age factor. The lose of Mike Wallace is a big factor since he was a huge part of their offense but I think the defense who was ranked near the top of the league will keep them in games. Ben Roethlisberger is still a two-time champion and he won’t go down without a fight. That being said, they can still contend for a wild card spot just like the Ravens.
  4. Cleveland Browns: A good young team that needs to find a quarterback and an identity. The Browns showed some promise last season by fighting and playing hard in their games but like this league has proven time and time again, you can’t win without a good quarterback. It will be another long year for the Browns as they try and improve the team.

AFC East:

  1. New England Patriots: What else can you say about this team? This division is easily theirs and barring a huge injury or anything unpredictable like that, it’s almost a lock. Tom Brady is Tom Brady and will have the Patriots back to the playoffs with another division title.
  2. Miami Dolphins: The addition of Mike Wallace to the offense instantly makes them more of a force in the AFC especially since they lost Reggie Bush. They went 7-9 last season but I look for them to improve and make a run at the playoffs as a wild card type team. Tannehill has this team looking good and he can only improve.
  3. Buffalo Bills: I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the Bills finish ahead of the Jets in the standings this year. The Bills went 6-10 and I believe just need a few pieces to actually become a contender. The addition of linebacker Manny Lawson should help out a poor line backing core and adding Kevin Kolb might just be what the doctor ordered for the Bills.
  4. New York Jets: This will probably be Rex Ryan’s last season as the head coach of the Jets unlike a miraculous playoff run occurs which is unlikely. The Jets have talent, they really do, but for some reason they don’t know how to combine it and turn it into wins on Sundays.

AFC West:

  1. Denver Broncos: With Peyton Manning running your team, it’s almost a guarantee that you will make the playoffs. They had one of the best offenses and defenses in football last year and I expect that to continue even with the departure of Elvis Dumervil. Until Manning retires, the AFC West is the Broncos to loose.
  2. Kansas City Chiefs: I am taking a long shot here that I actually believe in but I say the Chiefs despite their horrid season last year, finish second in the AFC West. I really liked the signing of Andy Reid as the coach because I believe it will rejuvenate his career and give him motivation again. Also trading for Alex Smith was a major move as it gives them a leader that has playoff experience. They had six pro bowlers selected despite only winning two games, and they have the first pick in the upcoming draft so what’s not to like about the Chiefs? They won’t contend just quite yet but they won’t be at the bottom of the standings either.
  3. San Diego Chargers: I am not quite sure what happened last year with Phillip Rivers but I don’t think it will happen again in 2013. With basically the same team and the addition of Danny Woodhead, I think it makes the Chargers the third best team in their division. It won’t be as miserable for Charger fans next year, but it won’t be as good as recent years suggested.
  4. Oakland Raiders: With the trade of Carson Palmer and departure of Heyward-Bey, at least pre-draft; I believe that the Raiders will have the worst record in the NFL next season. The only reason they won four games last year was because Palmer, despite his struggles, can still throw the football and put up points. The defense wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t good either. I may be wrong but I think it’s going to be a tough season again for the Black and Silver faithful.

AFC South:

  1. Indianapolis Colts: The Colts showed us last year that it is possible to have the worst record one year then completely turn it around the next and make the playoffs. Andrew Luck is a stud and I normally don’t say that about young quarterbacks. The 11-5 surprise team got even better by adding Darius Heyward-Bey from the Raiders and LaRon Landry from the Jets. Ina addition they signed veteran Matt Hasselbeck, which I think will play a crucial role in Luck’s development in the coming years. Look for the Colts to win the division for the first time in a long time without Peyton Manning leading the way.
  2. Houston Texans: Many people will question my pick of the Colts over the Texans and I understand why but I have my reasons. Yes they signed Ed Reed to help boost the already stellar defense but the fact that they had the best record in the league at one point last year and then fell to not having a first round bye in the playoffs tells me something, they lack mental toughness. In football, like any sport, you need to have both physicality and mental toughness and that is something I don’t believe the Texans have. With that being said though, I still believe that they will compete but just not win the division again.
  3. Tennessee Titans: At least the debate over which quarterback will start for the Titans is over, this is now Jake Locker’s team. The signings of Bernard Pollard and Shonn Greene will help this team but I don’t think it makes them a threat in the AFC. It will be at least a few more years until the Titans reach the playoffs again I believe.
  4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Many would argue that Jacksonville was the worst team in the league, not Kansas City. There are so many holes on this team to fix and it will take awhile for all of them to be put together and make the Jags relevant again. Receiver Justin Blackmon is a nice building piece for them but they need more than him on offense. Jones-Drew is a nice running back but lets face it, he is very injury prone. The Jaguars will be back at the bottom of the lottery again come next April.

Division Winners:

AFC North: Cincinnati Bengals

AFC East: New England Patriots

AFC West: Denver Broncos

AFC South: Indianapolis Colts

Wild Card Teams: Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans (Notable other teams: Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins)

Playoff Bracket:

  1. New England Patriots (12-4)
  2. Denver Broncos (12-4)
  3. Cincinnati Bengals (11-5)
  4. Indianapolis Colts (10-6)
  5. Baltimore Ravens (10-6)
  6. Houston Texans (9-7)

6 Houston Texans @ 3 Cincinnati Bengals: (Bengals 31-24)

5 Baltimore Ravens @ 4 Indianapolis Colts: (Ravens 27-14)

5 Baltimore Ravens @ 1 New England Patriots: (Patriots 31-28)

3 Cincinnati Bengals @ 2 Denver Broncos: (Bengals 20-17)

As the NFL Conference Championship Games approach us this upcoming weekend, many have sought to start to predict who will earn the right to play in the 2013 Super Bowl. While going to the Super Bowl is nice and everything, winning your conference is also a big accomplishment, something every team would gladly accept at the season’s beginning.

In the NFC the Atlanta Falcons and the San Francisco 49ers will square-off in the deep South. In the AFC, we have a rematch from last season’s AFC championship game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots. Four teams, blood, sweat and tears all working for the same goal, to be crowned Super Bowl Champions.

Here is a breakdown of each game and my predictions for each game:

NFC: San Francisco 49ers (11-4-1) vs. Atlanta Falcons (13-3)

Based on the outcomes of last week’s divisional games, one would say that the 49ers would be the easy pick in this game, but I say otherwise. For some reason, even while the Falcons played the Seahawks last week, many people forgot that they won 13 games and earned their right as the top team in the NFC. They were sixth in passing yards and went 7-1 at the Georgia Dome. This week’s game is being played at said Georgia Dome, a place the Falcons have been almost unbeatable in recent years. The Falcons were one of the most dominant teams all season long and shouldn’t be overlooked.

That said, their opponent has been titled the favorite to win the NFC. Led by rookie quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers easily beat the Green Bay Packers (my preseason pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl). Kaepernick’s performance was outstanding, but I still don’t trust him. The Packers had an above average defense, but it was very susceptible to the run — a specialty of the 49ers.

This week, I expect Kaepernick to come back down from his huge performance against the Packers. The 49ers defense was ranked in the top five in the NFL so that could guide them in this game against a strong Falcon offense. But Matt Ryan got the monkey off his back by (barely) winning a playoff game over the Seahawks and I expect him to lead his team to the Super Bowl. Hopefully I am wrong about Kaepernick (I’m a west coast guy) but until the game is over and I see the 49ers have made the Super Bowl, I don’t believe in or trust the second-year quarterback from Nevada. Give credit to the Falcons where credit is due. My prediction for this game is 24-17, Falcons win.

AFC: Baltimore Ravens (10-6) vs. New England Patriots (12-4)

Many people have the Patriots coasting back into the Super Bowl after defeating the Houston Texans 41-28 last week. But the Ravens just beat the number-one seed Broncos and are riding an emotional roller coaster at the moment that will not be derailed. The original Raven, Ray Lewis, will retire at the end of the season, and you know he would love nothing more than to leave the game he loves on top. The game Sunday will be played in Foxborough, where the Patriots were 6-2 there during the season, while the Ravens were a mere 4-4 on the road.

The Patriots were ranked about sixth in total offense this year, while the Ravens were ranked 13th in total offense. Just by statistics and the names of the teams alone, the sexy pick would be the Patriots to repeat as AFC champions. But, this is the unpredictable NFL and I believe that the Ravens will pull the upset over the Patriots just as they did a week earlier in the mile high city. Baltimore is riding a high at the moment that just can’t be measured and I’m sure Ray Lewis and the entire Raven team remembers last year’s AFC championship game where they were so close to reaching the Super Bowl for the first time since 2000 when they won it all. Don’t forget, the Ravens have already beaten the Patriots this season with a 31-30 week 3 win in Baltimore. My prediction for the game is 31-28 with the Ravens winning it and finally getting the winning field goal they deserve.

Super Bowl XLVII: Baltimore Ravens (10-6) vs. Atlanta Falcons (13-3)

See you there.

The lightning rod of last week’s divisional playoff round was beyond confirmation, that the NFL is still the boss in the American sports arena. The excitement of the NFL continues the skyrocket, that preemptively pushes the bounds of the NFL brand frontier.

And it only gets better my friends.

After the final seconds ticked away in each game this past weekend, questions about ensuing challenges arose almost instantly. Can quarterbacking sensation Colin Kaepernick, perpetuate his record-breaking performance in what most, might mistakenly cashier as a San Francisco cakewalk in Atlanta? After “Matty Ice” came from ahead to almost blow another home playoff game, do the Falcons have the late-game ability to hold another home-turf lead against a feverishly advancing opponent?

Will the Baltimore Ravens be able to celebrate the soul of their leader Ray Lewis once again in the toughest possible confrontation they could draw?

Does Tommy Touchdown, eventually get over on his most glaring nemesis of a defensive opponent?

The answers I refuse to guarantee – but even after last week’s salvage of a 1-3 prediction, the questions I will never refuse to ask, and the potential answers to those questions I will never refuse to expound upon.

Of course, Kaepernick’s NFL record-breaking performance for most rushing yards by a quarterback in any game, ever (183), won’t be duplicated. Without a doubt, Atlanta’s defense won’t limp and chase with the same evident worthlessness Green Bay’s defense did last Saturday. However, that doesn’t mean Kaepernick won’t utilize his feet to their fullest extent once again.

San Francisco will only lose because of turnovers. If they value and secure the ball, it will be incredibly difficult for Atlanta to beat them, even in the Georgia Dome. And if the neck-bucking ostrich, converts 3rd downs at a rate of 61.5% for the second playoff week in a row, we might as well consider the filthy Niners will be headed to the Super Bowl.

With all the attention directed at Kaepernick’s record-breaking day, doesn’t Tom Brady still have a stake in all this? Captain America seems to be the forgotten man in this year’s NFL Playoffs.

If the Patriots have a double-digit lead at recess, the Baltimore faithful and bandwagoners alike will begin to seriously doubt whether or not a Hail Mary is once again in the cards for the Ravens.

And if it is, Solomon Wilcots‘ preemptive cut-away from Ray Lewis’ tearful post-game sermon better not be prioritized by network promos. The pimping of The Big Bang Theory or Two Broke Girls apparently took precedence over a first-ballot NFL hall-of-famer, possibly giving us our last positive memory of him in celebration.

Next time, CBS, stay with the reality nugget right in front of you! We have a living legend shedding tears on live camera! You might want to stick with that.  Dorks uncomfortable around women and two waitresses who don’t get tipped,  can wait!

In all seriousness, I know just as much as you do about all this NFL analysis stuff — and in all honestly, probably a whole lot less.

What I do know however is a menu. I’ll be the guy that brought the bacon-wrapped shrimp and won your Super Bowl Party.

Show me the barbeque.

You’re Welcome.

The 2012 NFL rookie class has proven to be one of the better draft classes in recent years, with players like Trent Richardson, Alfred Morris, Doug Martin, Justin Blackmon and Ryan Tannehill just to name a few. Many teams this season have relied heavily on the players they selected back in April and many of them have produced. But three quarterbacks have stood out consistently all season long, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson have all proven they can be successful in the league and made their cases for the 2012 Rookie of the Year award. Here is my breakdown of each player’s season and my choice for who I would vote for in the award race if I actually could vote for it:

Russell Wilson defied expectations and helped launch the Seahawks into the playoffs. By Larry Maurer [CC-BY-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts: Selected first overall in the 2012 NFL draft, Luck led the Colts to a 11-5 record after the team went 2-14 the year before. He went 339-627 in passing attempts with a completion percentage of 54.1 and threw for 4,374 yards with 23 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Also he rushed for 255 yards and five touchdowns.

Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins: Selected second overall in the 2012 NFL draft, Griffin led the Redskins to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth after the team went 5-11 last season. He went 258-393 in his passing attempts with a completion percentage of 65.6 and threw for 3,200 yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 815 yards and seven touchdowns.

Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks: Selected 75th overall in the 2012 NFL draft, Wilson led the Seahawks to a 11-5 record after the team went 7-9 last year. He went 252-393 in passing attempts with a completion rating of 64.1 and threw for 3,118 yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Also he rushed for 489 yards and four touchdowns.

Each one of these players has played well enough to win the award. The fact that all three of their teams are in the playoffs is amazing. But the award can only go to one of them and my pick for the 2012 Rookie of the Year award goes to Russell Wilson of the Seahawks. For me it was a tough decision between him and RG III. Wilson is surely the underdog in this race, but I think he deserves the award over Luck and RGIII because of where he was drafted and the numbers he has put up. He had more touchdowns than both Luck and RGIII and still only managed 10 interceptions throughout the year. Plus his completion percentage is only 1.5 points below RGIII, which is astonishing.

Without the lone tie-game of the season, the Seahawks might have taken the NFC West from the 49ers and earned a first round bye. Wilson and RGIII are meeting up in the Wild Card round of the playoffs in what could be a great game with two great quarterbacks. Taking nothing away from Luck or RGIII but we all knew what to expect from them being the first and second picks in the draft but Wilson had to earn his starting spot in training camp and he proved that the decision to start him was the best move the Seahawks could have made all season.

49er Fans Flexing 1/13th Inch Biceps https://www.fansmanship.com/49er-fans-flexing-113th-inch-biceps/ https://www.fansmanship.com/49er-fans-flexing-113th-inch-biceps/#comments Tue, 17 Jan 2012 04:41:22 +0000 http://www.fansmanship.com/?p=4742 *A MAJOR warning: Don’t ever ever say anything about Jim Harbaugh or a fevered Harbaughite might bite you. God, it’s like fighting off a sea of zombies. Grow your own opinions and lose the childish interest.*

One in thirteen is a percentage of 7.7%. That’s a god damn disaster if you ask me.

One in every thirteen years is like getting laid momentarily before being asked to STOP. You madly reel up the fly, waddle home, flip up a defeat of bluing balls, hit the head, shower the left of the toilet seat, and then lightly rest the hammer with a false sense of pride.

Once in the last thirteen years the 49ers have shown promise, and a prostituting set of red and gold arise with a childish banter? With biceps made of molded Play dough? Puny stiffy’s the size of a Chihuahua’s?

Just ask Alex Smith about the Swiss cheese sea of Niner’ nation. Who, over a tumultuous career in the bay, was blamed by every side-cocked-hat-sporting teen and fat bellied, overworked office copier from San Jose to Sacramento for a disastrous ownership, fickle fan base and cohort of condemned know-it-all coaches and offensive coordinators.

But after aptly delivering in last weekend’s win over the Saints with two beautifully well-timed and strong throws, Smith is celebrated by Niner’ Nation, as if each and every one of them “knew it all along.”

Despite the one blaring factoid in relation to Smith’s erratic play — that he played for six offensive coordinators and three coaches in six years — the lack of sport education from most of San Franciscans was and is the reason they missed that  point of immense gravity.

But magically, here comes Jim Harbaugh.

After his signing last January an inoculation spread among lukewarm fans like a microorganism. It was called idiocy; Idiociticosis, a protective coating endorsed by the franchise to diminish criticism and critique.

And now, just one week shy from a game against the red hot New York Giants, a team similar to the 2007 Super Bowl team but built with a nastier set of freakish receivers, the same super-duper “I got 49 problems but the Pack aint’ one” concoction of clowns are idiotically brushing aside the Giants because of a mediocre mid-season win AT HOME against them? Yes, stupidly.

Idiotic point one: Never take lightly a team this sizzling with a 4th quarter closer like Eli Manning. Hindsight isn’t 20/20, it’s blind.

Idiotic point two: Never ever be so stupid to demean an organization, the Packers, who are 13-1 against you the last fifteen years with cheap one-line replays.

Then we get into last week’s parlay against the New Orleans Saints, who just 5-3 on the road and historically weak on grass outdoors, blew it big-time with six — yes SIX — turnovers in a rumpled 36-32 loss at the hands of the 49ers.

Wait, hold on. Before I even think about the “glory” of defeating a team centered on the great Drew Brees, let me get one thing seriously straight, did I say SIX turnovers?

Six turnovers and the 49ers hadn’t finished the job in the 2nd quarter? They flailed like a fish out of water, looked like children, green and lucky, scooted with their pants on fire, and escaped the burning building.

Ugly.

Let’s begin with the micromanagement of Jim “Face like I have an angry Hemorrhoid” Harbaugh, whose force-fed slow and methodical run straight up the middle on a 3rd and 3 approach to offense is blander than a saltine cracker. Whose shackles around a blooming offense with a heavy handed dictator’s force, is shrinking the 9ers offensive testosterone. Despite the offensive weaponry of dynamic athletes like Vernon Davis, Mike Crabtree, Frank Gore, and the strong armed Alex Smith, Harbaugh’s incessantly fallen in love with kicker, David Akers, and stunted any, if any at all, offensive relevance with a drum hum one dimensional front that will not work for long.

No matter what many speculate, mostly, a Super Bowl team must manage to push the opposition on both sides of the ball.

The 49ers have some of this in their defense, the same reason the Packers this year are left wading in last year’s rotted glory with a defense made of powder puffers.

But a game-winning drive to knock off a team with six turnovers is not glorious, it’s lucky, like swinging a bat with a blindfold and hitting a grand slam.

For some of you out there, being the Troy Glaus “powerhouse” of football franchises is enough. But for me, I’d rather riddle to the roof a complex infrastructure of dominance like a Matt Kemp or Albert Pujols.

Never pick an apple early off the tree. It’s green and overly tart, taste like a lemon with a bitter skin. The 49ers are seasons away from being considered a dominate competitor.

So let it rest. Let you team be.

Revel with the understanding that the Giants have been here before and your team hasn’t, that the Packers will be there next year with an upgraded defense, the Patriots with Tom Brady, the Steelers a healthy Big Ben, Saints with a bone to pick, improved Ravens offense and the Texans a year more mature.

Green Inexperience and White Noise https://www.fansmanship.com/green-inexperience-and-white-noise/ https://www.fansmanship.com/green-inexperience-and-white-noise/#comments Thu, 13 Jan 2011 22:46:01 +0000 http://sportsasweseeit.wordpress.com/?p=106 The New York Jets – I used to see a classic uniform and respected franchise. Now I see green inexperience combined white noise, and that just doesn’t jive at all.

Coach Ryan, you resemble a clown at a party trying to grab attention with balloon animals and a water-squirting flower in your shirt pocket. I’ve got news for you; kids over the age of five don’t even like clowns. And apparently that’s what you take this whole process as, a fun little birthday party designed for toddlers. The routine has become stale.

It seems hard to understand where this guy comes off? Did the ratings of his reality television stint on HBO’s Hard Knocks this pre-season inflate his ego? Congrats Rex, maybe you can bunk up with Vinny, Paulie and the Situation next season on the Jersey Shore. Make sure not to bring home any grenades from the club or you might get clowned, but you are already used to that.

Maybe it’s an aura of self-entitlement? He is after all the son of one of the greatest defensive minds professional football has ever seen, right? I don’t think Kevin Gilbride’s face agrees.

His father, Buddy, was the creator of the ’46’ or ‘Bear’ front that was ahead of its time and is still used today – on the high school football gridiron. Wow, the old man decided one day to jam the strong safety up on the line of scrimmage in an eight technique in the tight end’s face. What a novel concept. Hopefully his Canton parking spot is already reserved.

You would think a coach who has had every advantage through the ranks and undoubtedly got his first job in the business solely because of his last name would be a little more humble? The words coming out of this man’s mouth would lead the casual observer to believe he is speaking in front of a backdrop of Lombardi trophies.

He claims his bravado is because he wants to take all the pressure off of his players and lay it exclusively onto himself. Well, that idea is great in theory, but he fails to grasp the underlying and evident concept within that idea – just because the noise comes out of his mouth doesn’t make the other team want to beat his team any less. They don’t care where the motivation comes from. Coach or player, any material they can use from the opposition, they will.

Now the jowl-flapper’s new goal is to try and verbally infiltrate the Belichick compound that, as we are all aware of, is guarded tighter than Fort Knox. You’re no James Bond, Rex. In fact, Maxwell Smart makes you look ridiculous. The Pats are watching you dig your own grave, ‘and loving it.’

Ryan blathered earlier this week, “this isn’t about the players, its all about me versus Belichick, period.”

Uh, no coach. It has everything to do with the players and absolutely nothing to do with you versus Belichick. It would be one thing if you rivaled him somehow, but comparing yourself and your accomplishments to him and his is like comparing a collection of Olympic gold medals to a 5th grade track meet participation ribbon.

We are lead to believe that it is “all about” a coach with multiple super bowl rings versus a coach with three playoff wins to his name because you said so? Keep dreaming. And no, dad’s accomplishments don’t count.

It’s not just Ryan that is yakking. It seems this week Antonio Cromartie has been attempting to bait Tom Brady. The New York Post has even quoted him on the cover of a recent issue, “$@#% Brady.”

He has continued throughout the week with his outlandish statements and has been baited himself by the media, as it seems Cromartie has fallen into his own trap. He has taken as many shots at Brady and the rest of the Patriots this week as number of children he has fathered out of wedlock with different mothers – more than a handful.

Might I remind Antonio the fate of big-mouthed defensive backs when verbally challenging Brady and the Pats in the playoffs the week leading up to the game. Does a certain number twenty-seven in black and gold ring a bell? Three words: Anthony. Smith. Punked.

And not just punked, but punked of epic proportion. After proclaiming a guaranteed victory only to be beat on a deep ball for all the marbles late in the game, I believe he was then ousted out of football for good. Literally. Same day. Sources say he didn’t even get to shower before security escorted him off of the stadium premises. Will Cromartie be dealt a similar fate?

When questioned about Cromartie’s remarks this week, Ryan backpedaled, “without question, everyone on this roster respects Tom Brady.”

Oh yea? By everyone, you mean everyone except Cromartie, right? Nothing says respect like a direct blast that requires dollar and percentage signs when relayed in print.

You are a savant of blunt honesty, aren’t you coach? Or is it selective and only when it benefits you? Ryan must take people for idiots. Again, coach, you may be a clown, but we aren’t toddlers. Your spin doesn’t work on the media or the fans and it only makes you look even more foolish.

*

It’s almost as if the Jets are talking to themselves in a way, trying to drum up an actual scenario where they win in their own minds, like a consistent failure would do when transparently trying to make up for his shortcomings.

The way the Pats put a beat down on them in their last meeting, maybe they are more comparable to a Chihuahua who constantly and insignificantly keeps trying to bite your ankles, no matter how many times it gets shooed away.

The best part about this verbal spewing by the Jets is that the Pats don’t need to say anything. They don’t need to return fire. The fire coming from the Jets is coming from too great of a distance to even register on the Pats’ radar. The franchise with three super bowl rings this decade is confident on their veteran battleship. The franchise that hasn’t sniffed a super bowl in almost four decades is pathetically grasping from their rubber dingy.

The Pats are the quintessential ‘play with your pads’ team. If their skill in big games over the past decade had a mouth, it would rival that of Floyd Mayweather.

The fact is, it doesn’t. And that is more than just refreshing. It is perfect for the old-school fan to get behind when choosing between a team that talks with its pads and a team that has a mouth that writes checks its ass can’t cash.

All that considered, Ryan continued to ramble this week, “you shouldn’t like the other team you are playing right now, it’s the playoffs!”

Yes coach, you shouldn’t like the other team you are playing. No one in the sporting arena likes the opposition standing in the way of its goal. We understand that you need to find reasons to get fired up for the game. Such is the nature of this game of football.

However, to make this exercise a public spectacle and a media circus only raises the stakes to a level that will bust you completely sooner than later. It is the equivalent of shoving all your chips in the middle of the table with a marginal hand at best. Your only problem is the Pats love nothing more than to call bluffs. They have built a dynasty on it. News flash: the owner won’t keep giving you re-buys every time you bust out coach. The more you talk and lose, the sooner you get fired.

When considering Rex Ryan as a coach and what he is so desperately trying to accomplish, my mind keeps coming back to one common theme; and that is the direct relationship between super bowl champion coaches and a calm confidence that exudes from them and doesn’t need to be at all overt.

Bill Bellichick comes to mind. So does Bill Walsh. There is a reason why Mike Ditka and your daddy as his assistant were one-hit wonders. The talkers at the podium during the week don’t win the ultimate prize year after year. They never do. The ones that talk with actions on Sundays end up hoisting multiple Lombardi’s.

You want to become a super bowl winner someday, coach? A piece of advice for you: keep it under the radar. Quit giving endless bulletin board material.

Your big theme for the season speech to the team that was filmed in training camp for Hard Knocks comes to mind, “$@&% being the hunters, we want to be the hunted! We want to play from on top and have all the pressure! We want people always coming after us!” (And apparently talk every form of trash in the book along the way). What a misguided idiot.

Contrary to that, quit giving teams reasons to see themselves as the hunters and you the hunted. Predators last longer than prey. It’s not an opinion; it’s a fact of nature. There was this guy named Darwin…. oh… well… never mind.

The more teams have reasons to really come after you, the higher the probability that you will get beat than would be otherwise. It’s a simple concept.

And the sad fact is teams don’t want to beat you now because you are on top. You aren’t on top. They want to beat you simply because you talk too much! What a greatly advantageous place to be!

You want to have success in doing something where you can put yourself way out there on a limb? I would forget coaching in the NFL and stick to posting homemade foot-fetish videos.

-Andrew Stevens
